I've read the prologue three times now, I haven't even gotten to Chapter 1 yet. Why? Well, there are two reasons. First off it is honestly one of the best prologues I've ever read, regardless of how many times I've heard it on BlogTV. The second reason is that I keep getting sidetracked from moving on in the reading (thanks to that thing called 'homework') and I forget things very easily. So I will probably post Chapter 1 in a day or two since it's the weekend. Just to let everyone know I haven't done much research on what the book is about because I want to be surprised, I just know there is a boy named Bran, a banker, etc. So it's a journey for me with no way of knowing where this book is going to go next.
And now on to the fun, games and a little murder.
Out of the prologue my favorite part has to be when Emry is sitting in her car and realizes that something has gone wrong. The way the two parts (Clarence's POV and Emry's) is really great and well laced together. I can already see that I will have no trouble with this book and understanding Kaleb's world of magic.
You have to have a very creative mind to write a book like this. You don't hear the name Emry every day, or even Clarence. And that's what I like the most, it's not typical. And little things like that makes me want to read more. Another thing is the words that Emry uses when she makes Bran disappear, "Sideni aywa!" made me laugh, I could totally see someone shouting that at the trunk of their car.
Entering the prologue I am quickly filled with anxiousness and sadness due to the night and Clarence's heart feeling 'cold and dead'. From right here I can tell that this chapter isn't going to be very euphoric. This character is running all over the place and obviously hiding from something, but what? I quickly find out a van is chasing him. 'Chase' is a mean and scary word, and nothing positive ever comes out of it. 'The girl chased the puppy' - Yeah? Well what if that puppy has rabies? 'The man chased the hotdog' - Uh, why is there a man chasing a hot dog? Obviously this is a psychological problem.
My anxiety is going insane by the time the men catch up with him, but then curiousity takes over because I now find out that Clarence is running away from something that needs to be 'cleaned up'. It's a project that the police are now involved in and are after Joris, the lead man who was chasing Clarence in the van. Someone named Baslyn is dead, I'm sure I'll read more about that later and also Joris is after Bran Hambric, the boy Clarence is trying to make sure no one finds. Before the POV's switch over to Emry's Joris states that he is coming back for Bran and that Farfield is not dead, even though Clarence said it was.
The next part is when we get into Emry and what she is doing with Bran. Not one part of Emry's POV is at all happy, it's sad and depressing but it tells the story good. She makes Bran disappear with a piece of paper in his hands before she is killed by an unknown woman. Emry is in relief before she passes since she knows that Bran is safe.
In the end, Bran is waking up in the city of Dunce.
Sad to see Emry gone but excited to see Bran for the first time and see what was written on the piece of paper. No one knows how excited I am to finally be reading this story and learning about Bran. It was hard to ignore everyone talking about what it was about, but it's worth it. I wanted this to be a clueless read and that's what I'm getting.
